Back from holiday

We've had a great time in Thailand visiting our family. Now, back in Holland, many small paintings I have to photograph, varnish. Will post them after a few days. Below are a few impressions of scenery and my pochade. Below all of the used materials, colors. Thank you for your interest in my work! [Emails I will reply to soon.]

Colors that I took with me to Thailand: A favorite: Bown Lake yellowish (Goya 544), Cad Yellow deep Rembrandt (=R) 210, Orange ochre, R 232, Cad yellow lemon R 207, Permanent Red medium R 377, Permanent Red Violet R 567, Ultramarine deep R 5??, King's blue R 517, Warm grey R 718, Cold grey 717, Green earth R 629, Oxide black R735, Purple R 517(?finished/threw away..) Turquoise blue R (?? finished/threw away..) Titanium white

In the pochade these tubes (small)(15 ml), a knife, a mirror, stapler to put bigger panels to the pochade. The scissors to get the staples out after. Papertape for the box, dubble sided tape, cloth, brushes separate. Panels I took: 20x20 cm (8x8 inch) and 18x24 cm (7x10 inch)

I took some medium with me, turpentine, but that was quickly not usable, fell over, and due to lazyness grey quick. I cleaned my brushes during painting on cloth, every evening in sunflower oil to rinse. No soap for three weeks.

Blue grey all over. Rain forecasted, thunder even, but it's just sitting there. People continue walking, kids playing. Here I'm interested in the water mirroring the sky. The wide flatness of the water. Even though the tide is rising, it's going so slow. My easel is standing on muddy quicksand. This painting needs a sunlit place or a spotlight. The changes in thickness in paint, and the subtle color changes demand it.

The effects of light. I will never get tired of. I will never fully understand. In here, for me, is a turning point; I didn't paint the sea as to be the sea. I just looked at color. Movement. There's no -1- right way of painting anything of course. There are millions of ways.

They are so beautiful, on their long legs, thin cows, young. But a person walking by said: they are all orphens. And yes, she is right. Is it a good thing to sell/separate these young guys from their mothers at this or younger age? I think it's not ok. I hope I can help to grow more awareness on this issue, the well being of livestock in general, among us.

Half way through the painting I couldn't find my mirror. I went a long walk to my car, and drove to the shop area. Found a drugstore. Bought me a mirror!, went back to my easel and gear and painting still standing there on the beach(!). Imagine the crazy effort!! But I love the result. This time I got beyond my 'finished' stage, on purpose (thinking-I'm loosing all that's been great-oh no). And what's left to me feels like a kind of 'essence'. The memory of the reality of the morning was more important than the reality itself with its changing conditions. The memory of their high lit, light reflecting bodies felt endearing to me. The scene painted here never occurred pricisly like this. The girl I saw on the right, three children I saw on the left. (different light/perspective!) They wore different clothes. But when pushing a painting into essence, all that matters is feeling, composition and the painting-colors and strokes itself. To create a harmonious painting/feeling, I guess..  :) [But that all of course is a personal view on things..!]

Me and Anneke were on this beach until 1 in the night. Couldn't see color(tube) from color. The day after I finished it (changed into a better painting) from memory, I had to, because there weren't any pictures taken, or to be found on the internet. Maybe lucky there weren't. Funny how memory often seems to have all of the answers needed in (finishing a) painting.
